DAVAO CITY, Philippines – Tribal leaders in Talaingod and Kapalong towns in Davao del Norte yesterday asked the Department of Education (DepEd) to revoke its order to close three Lumad schools.
“Keep the schools open,” said Doloman Dawsay, spokesman for the Salugpungan Ta Tanu Igkanugon (Unity in Defense of Ancestral Land).
The DepEd in Davao del Norte earlier recommended the deployment of military personnel to teach children in the area.
Dawsay lamented that the decision to close down their schools came from those who do not represent the Tala-ingod Manobo tribe.
“We built these schools…. They want it closed…We will not allow it. We will wage pangayaw (tribal war), if needed,” he said.
“Maybe it is their office (DepEd) that should be shut down, because they have not done anything,” he added.
Members of the Talaingod Manobo tribe held a rally in front of the office of the National Commission for the Indigenous Peoples and the Commission on Human Rights and DepEd here yesterday.
